SPAR Greece

The retail sales in Greece now stand at €705 million. There are 189 SPAR stores The excellent performance of SPAR Greece was recognized by their inclusion in the ICAP 'Strongest companies in Greece' list for 2010.

Greece was one of the later European entrants into official recession with growth sustained, artificially, by high government spending. The EU and IMF agreed to bailout Greece by providing financial support. As part of this deal, the Greek government were required to implement huge spending cuts and increased taxes. This has had a major impact on consumer confidence.

SPAR Greece faced the 'consumer crisis' with increased promotion and customer offers, strong media communication and particularly important was the opening of 8 new stores in the last quarter of the year. Five of the stores opened were EUROSPAR, this illustrates SPAR's continuing commitment in driving sales by responding to consumer needs and at the same time investing in new stores.

In an exceptionally difficult economic environment SPAR Greece achieved a 0.5% increase in turnover and 0.5% gain in market share. This was an outstanding achievement in a retail environment where increased taxes and lower wages led to a marked reduction in consumer buying power.

All of the stores operated by SPAR Greece are company owned and are under two retail formats; the SPAR neighbourhood  supermarket and the EUROSPAR supermarket. The EUROSPAR format accounts for 35% of total sales from 20% of stores.

Greece became a member of SPAR in 1969, when the Veropoulos Company obtained the SPAR license and in 1973 opened its first SPAR store. The group operates three distribution centres. The Veropoulos Company also operates petrol forecourts under the SPAR fascia. Today, SPAR is the fifth largest food retailer in this market.

SPAR Greece have continued to strengthen their sustainability commitment. They launched the 'Smart Move' campaign in 2010, which focused on local community health, nutrition and weight balance. In addition to this, they launched 'SPAR Bio', a new organic private label range which again contributes to their green sustainable image.

In 1985 SPAR Greece formed a corporate football team. Every year the team organize a match to commemorate the SPAR founders, Costas and Alekos Veropoulos. This year the opponents were the Liverpool legends squad team. The final score was 1-2 to the visitors.
