The origins of SPAR in Austria date back to 1954 when the first SPAR organisation was established. The modern SPAR AG was established in 1970 when the original founding families joined with other regional wholesalers to form a corporation to operate SPAR. SPAR Austria AG is a 100% privately owned Austrian Company.


SPAR Austria has seen continued growth through 2010. Retail sales increased by 4.5% to a record €5.13 billion, with retail selling space now at over 1 million square metres.

SPAR store numbers increased to 1,502 by the end of 2010. More than 700 of these are operated by independent retailers SPAR continued its store modernisations programme with some 100 stores undergoing refurbishment.

In 2010, SPAR Austria created 2,000 additional jobs bringing the total employed to 38,000, including apprentices.

SPAR Austria has promoted the development of SPAR outside Austria. ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) which was established in 1990, has developed SPAR in Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic. ASPIAG also operates a SPAR organisation in Northern Italy.

SPAR Austria opened its first environmentally friendly supermarkets in 2010. The reduction in CO Vienna and Murau (Styria) equates to the total annual emissions of 40 Austrian households. The two new stores were awarded with an international climate protection prize by ÖGNI.

INTERSPAR celebrated its 40 Austria in 2010. This was marked with the opening of 10 new stores, 4 new build and 6 refurbishments.  NTERSPAR invested €60 million in these projects.

A new INTERSPAR store concept was developed in 2010. This concept is focused on urban areas and the store size has been reduced to 2,500m2. By the end of 2010, SPAR had opened 4 hypermarkets based on this new concept.

The expansion of the SPAR European Shopping Centres Business (SES) continues. A total of 24 major shopping centres across central Europe are owned and managed by SES. The most recent shopping centre was opened in Vöcklabruck, Austria.

SPAR Austria launched the SPAR Express format in Austria. 11 SPAR Express stores were opened in 2010 and it is planned to open a total of 70 SPAR Express stores on petrol forecourts over the next 2.5 years.

 

The development of the private label range continued with the successful launch of SPAR Premium, a new high quality artisan range. Pierce Brosnan is the face of the SPAR Premium range. The S-Budget range continues to perform well and the range was also introduced by SPAR UK and SPAR Ireland. SPAR Austria organised the first. S-Budget-party involving thousands of young people at different hotspots in a number of Austrian cities. The S-Budget concept was extended with the launch of the S-Budget travel website, which offers low cost travel within and outside of Austria.

'Stickermania' was one of the most successful marketing activities of the year. Collectable stickers were distributed when items were purchased in SPAR stores. The novelty sticker books were sold out within weeks.

The social network presence of SPAR Austria was extended with profiles being created for Facebook, Xing and Twitter.

SPAR Austria continues to place huge importance on Corporate Social Responsibility. Their contributions to charity totalled €.3 million in 2010. They received the Austrian Integration Prize in 2010 their apprenticeship academy.

SPAR established a new form of sustainability training for apprentices. The apprentices learned about issues such as responsible shopping, saving energy, etc. These learnings have been put into practice as the apprentices can feed back the information to customers in-store.

For many years, SPAR Austria, has been committed to alternative egg production. Recently, a unique control system for eggs was implemented in Austria, which exceeds general standards. This commitment was recognised when SPAR Austria received the international animal welfare award, 'The Golden Egg' in October 2010.

SPAR Austria are investing in electric mobility in the form of e-bikes and e-forecourts. They are the first Austrian company to introduce an initiative of this kind. 2,000 e-bikes have been sold by EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores with 56 e-forecourts constructed in 2010.
