Corporate Social Responsibility also remains high on the agenda, with contributions to charity totalling €900,000. In cooperation with WWF Austria, all 83 SPAR Private Label fish products at service counters, cooled and frozen fish, as well as canned fish, were converted to sustainable sources in 2013. The 60 INTERSPAR fresh fish counters are the first and only ones in the Austrian retail trade certified with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label, with over 800 employees trained as MSC fish experts.
SPAR maintained its position as the largest private Austrian employer by creating 1,000 jobs, bringing its total number of employees to 41,000. Every year, 2,700 apprentices from 17 skilled trades take part in training at SPAR, making it the largest company in Austria to train apprentices.
The origins of SPAR in Austria date back to 1954 when the first SPAR organisation was established. The modern SPAR AG was created in 1970 when the original founding families joined with other regional wholesalers to form SPAR Austria AG, a 100% privately owned Austrian company. To mark its 60th anniversary, SPAR will thank its customers with promotions, gifts and many surprises lasting 60 weeks long. The creative nature of the promotions being held throughout the 60 weeks reflect the changes the organisation has seen over the decades and highlight the local company ownership of the business. Retro style materials have been integrated into the planning which illustrate the brand’s look and feel over the period of its history.
