SPAR the green pioneer
Nationwide introduction of CO2 neutral organic shopping bags in all SPAR stores
In the summer of 2007 INTERSPAR was the first trading organisation in Austria to introduce shopping bags made of renewable raw materi-als. Due to the sensational success and the great acceptance from customers, the SPAR organic shopping bags will now be available in all SPAR, SPAR-Gourmet and EUROSPAR stores in Austria.
Every year approximately 6,000 up to 7,000 tons of polyethylene shopping bags are circulated. In thermal recycling processes 13,800 up to 16,100 tons of CO2 are generated. (source: Federal Environment Agency)
A CO2 neutral shopping bag Since the summer of 2007
INTERSPAR has been selling shopping bags made of renewable materials. Those are made of 100% potato starch and are CO2 neutral, as during combustion only the same amount of carbon dioxide is released as the organic raw materials absorbed during the growth process. Furthermore all raw materials of the organic shopping bags are 100% compostable and suitable for the organic use in biogas plants. In addition to this environmentally friendly plus point, the organic shopping bags offer another advantage for customers: due to the nature of the potato starch, the bags ‘breathe’ and thereby keep fruit and vegetables as well as pastries fresh longer.
Extension to SPAR, SPAR-Gourmet and EUROSPAR “Now our customers have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the environment with their daily shopping. Our environmentally friendly organic shopping bags stand for sustainability and have positive implications on our own quality of live in the end“, explains CEO of SPAR Austria, Dr. Gerhard Drexel.
Austrian partner and Austrian suppliers
Even during the production of the shopping bags the environment is con-sidered. In cooperation with a partner in Tyrol and mainly Austrian potato suppliers, the routes of transportation are short and therefore also envi-ronmentally friendly.
Great success in INTERSPAR hypermarkets
Since the introduction of the organic shopping bags in INTERSPAR stores, the usage of paper bags (formerly 20%) and plastic bags (formerly 80%) has been changed to paper 20%, plastic 60% and organic 20%. This shows that the number of customers who previously bought plastic bags has decreased and the number of customers buying organic shopping bags has strengthened instead. This has a positive effect on environmental and climate protection.
The organic shopping bags (0,35 Euro) are slightly more expensive than the polyethylene bags (0,21 Euro).
